Obituary

John William Kreger, Jr. of Upper Turkeyfoot Township passed away on November 25, 2025. Born prematurely on September 18, 1950, to the late John Sr. and Maude (Colflesh) Kreger, he was kept warm in an oven in the Edwin Price Hospital in Confluence, PA until the doctor could drive to Pittsburgh to pick up the area's first infant incubator. From his first day to his last, John was a fighter. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 29 years, Rita (Gindlesperger) Kreger, an infant brother Barry Ray, and several aunts and uncles. John is survived by his children, Betsy and William, both of Upper Turkeyfoot Township, sister-in-law, Louise (Gerald) Dumbauld, Rockwood, his best friend and brother, Ron (Janey) DeBacco, Greensburg and a legion of beloved friends. John served as a Township Supervisor for Upper Turkeyfoot Township for 19 years and worked as a custodian in the Rockwood Area School District, predominantly at the former Kingwood Elementary School, for 35.5 years, impacting the lives of students, families and the community through leadership, loyalty and kindness. Above all else, John was a sixth-generation farmer known for feeding the community with eggs, beef, sausage and sweet corn during the phases of his life. He was a member of the PA Association of Township Supervisors, the Somerset County Association of Township Supervisors, the Kingwood IOOF and a lifetime member of the New Centerville and Rural Volunteer Fire Company. Some of the highlights of his years were spent hunting, playing softball and baseball (where he was fondly known as "Cuppy"), talking politics, working at the annual Kingwood Picnic and Farmers and Threshermens Jubilee and visiting with friends and neighbors at his sweet corn shack along 281 in the summers. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the members of John's church family at the Kingwood Church of God, and the staff at Meadow View Nursing Center and Windber Hospice for your care for John over the past several months. Friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, November 29 from 4-8 pm at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, November 30 at the Kingwood Church of God Fellowship Center (the former Kingwood Elementary School), with Pastors Will Miller and James Monticue officiating. Interment will follow in Kingwood IOOF Cemetery. There will be viewing one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Kingwood Church of God or Windber Hospice.
