Obituary

Donald A. Gales, 91, Confluence, passed away Monday March 2nd at his home surrounded by his granddaughter and caregivers. He was born on April 13th, 1934, in Pittsburgh, PA, beloved son of Andrew and Anna (Wanzco) Gales. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia, daughter Patrice Benson and sister, Bonnie (Gales) Miller. Don is survived by his sons Christopher (Johanna) Gales of Confluence and Andrew "AJ" Gales of Greensburg, and his daughters Dawn Gales of Confluence and Ambie Gales of Youngwood. Grandchildren: Katie, Jill, Nathaniel, Alexandra, Victoria, Julianna, Forrest, Ignatius, and Uriah. Great Grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Alex, Kallie, Leah, and Theodore "Thor". Don was a retired United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant who served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his more than two decades of service, he received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with the V device for Valor, amongst many other awards and accolades. He was a former member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Catholic War Vets of Pittsburgh. Even after retiring from the Marines, he spent his later decades continuing his service and commitment to his fellow veterans at every opportunity he could. Don did more than love the outdoors, he lived it. As an avid hunter and fisherman, he took pleasure in spending time at both his hunting cabin and campground. This always meant great experiences, and memories with family, friends, and newcomers from far and near.  He was a member of countless sportsman/outdoorsman organizations over the years. Even as he aged, he never let his own limitations prevent him from experiencing nature and all it still had to offer. He truly enjoyed spending time with his buddy Jonathan, going on the side-by-side to check his fields and the wooded hillsides. There will be no viewing or funeral at this time. A celebration of life is to be held at a later date for family and friends. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The family would like to especially thank his nurse Kaylee, aide Penny, and his caregivers Kirsten, Vickie, and Felisha for all their love, compassion, and devotion.
